Pat Whelan Training - OSPRE and Beyond

About Pat Whelan

Pat Whelan retired from West Yorkshire Police in April 2002 following the completion of 30 years Police Service.

In September 1990 he went to the Force Training School at Wakefield as a Detective Sergeant in Crime Training and delivered the old 10 week National CID Course together with CID Refresher Courses and Interview Skills Training.

In 1993 he received the prestigious Instructor of the Year Award from his colleagues.

Pat returned to the Training School in May 1996 and again delivered Interview Skills Training using the PEACE model.

Together with a colleague he spent two weeks in Nepal during which time they delivered the complete PEACE package to the Nepalese Police.

In 1997, together with two colleagues, he was given the task of developing an Examination Unit within the Force Training School to deliver OSPRE I training to meet the shortfalls and to raise the standard of candidates' success within West Yorkshire Police.

The Unit quickly established itself nationally by attaining a standard that saw West Yorkshire consistently within the top three of the six major Police Forces.

This success was recognised and Awards of Merit were presented to members of the Unit.
